Loading a DEM Landscape
Loading a VistaPro DEM into your software is very simple. All you need to do is select 'Open Landcape' from the 'File' menu. You will be faced with a standard Windows selection box. Find the VPR DEMs you have save upon your computer or on your CD-ROM, click on the selection you would like to load. You will find files that can be loaded in landscape (.DEM ) file or a Session file (.V4S) formats.

As an alternative to this, you are free to find your VistaPro DEM on your computer or CD-ROM and simply drag it into the program window.

The screen will switch back to the topographical map and Control Panel and Vistapro will begin loading the landscape. It could take several seconds to complete.

Once Vistapro is finished loading the landscape, you will see a topographical view of the landscape in the box near the left side of the screen.

The topographic map is colored by elevation. Dark greens represent the lowest altitudes, browns represent the middle altitudes, and gray-whites are the highest. Move your mouse pointer over the landscape. Notice that the X, Y, and Z figures in the Status Window (located above the topographical map) change. The X and Y values represent the location of the pointer on the map, and the Z value represents the elevation of the terrain under the pointer.

How to Open a Region:
This function automatically loads several small Vistapro landscapes into a larger area. When Open Region is selected, Vistapro loads the landscape file, which you select from the resulting open file dialog, into the lower left corner of the topographic map region. The program then searches the current landscape directory for other landscapes that are located within the current topographic map region. The Open Region function requires the “X” series Vistapro landscape files and is only applicable when the landscape (DEM ) size is set to either Large or Huge.

Vistapro’s Open Region function searches all files in a given directory for additional landscapes to load into the current topographic region. It determines which landscapes to load by examining the header of each landscape. The header has information about the file’s longitude and latitude.

We highly recommend that you install different landscape sets into different directories. That way Vistapro will have fewer files to examine when you load a region. There is also the possibility that some data from other planets will overlap the same areas of the earth or that a DEM file that you have modified (Vistapro saves the current landscape’s coordinates along with its other data) will load on top of unmodified data. You wouldn’t want Vistapro to have to search through thousands of files to find the four that fit into the current area. When there are thousands of files in a directory, the open file dialog takes quite a while to fetch all the file names.
